The Club was first called the Victorian Launch Club, this was later changed to the Victorian Motor Boat Club.

The club met for many years at the Port Phillip Club Hotel.

Until new premises were acquired at a site near the current Ferry Terminal at Princes Bridge Wharf. On the 22nd of June 1936,

the club applied for lease to occupy land formerly used by a Mr Coe as a woodyard.

The lease was granted by the Melbourne Harbour Trust on the 26th of June 1936, for a rental of 7 pounds per annum.

Later that year Mr Charles Marshall in association with the Hon. W.J.Beckett began the process to apply for the prefix Royal that would be applied to the club.

On the 18th of February 1937, the Lords High Commisioners of the Admiralty approved the use of the prefix royal this was presented to His Majesty the King for his blessing.
